THE CONTEXT

Aiming at encouraging a cultural and behavioral change in the use of solar energy,  the SHAAMS project joined Earth Hour in 2014, the unique environmental event organized by WWF that each year involves and mobilizes hundreds of millions of people across the world, with the common purpose of creating a sustainable future for the planet.

In the framework of Earth Hour, SHAAMS launched a regional video mobile / smartphone competition called “Use Your Power”.

THE COMPETITION
The “Use Your Power” Video Competition engages young students to produce innovative and creative short films which show the advantages of solar energy and its uses in everyday life. This year the competition will include a regional component. There will be two awards: a national award – for the best video selected in each country – and a Mediterranean award, for the best video selected from all the national winner videos.

The competition is for students aged 12-16.

Video entries must meet the following technical requirements:

  • The video must address solar energy issues
  • The video must be made with a mobile/smartphone. Videos made by other types of professional cameras will be disqualified
  • The video must be the result of a collaborative group effort
  • The video should run for no less than 30 seconds and no longer than 3 minutes.
  • Only the following video formats are allowed for submission: MOV and MPEG (1, 2, and 4)
  • Entries must be submitted before the deadline, by 20 March 2015 (for Lebanon) by email to krystel.khalil@berytech.org

LICENSES AND CLEARANCES

Entrants must ensure that before submission they have obtained all licenses and clearances (including, but not limited to, copyrights, artist rights, usage rights, performance rights) to allow all elements of the film to be screened in public across all media, including web and wireless.

Entrants are to send the signed rights release together with their video submission.

By entering this competition, entrants agree that WWF, Earth Hour and SHAAMS have obtained the rights to their film submissions, and have provided permission for WWF and SHAAMS to showcase their films on the WWF, Earth Hour and SHAAMS websites and any other media in connection with the Competition and Earth Hour 2015, without additional compensation (also applies to advertising, publicity and promotional purposes).

SELECTION CRITERIA

Shortlisted entries will be judged by WWF Mediterranean & SHAAMS Communications team according to the following criteria:

  • consistency with the topic (solar energy)
  • originality
  • quality of the filming.

PRIZES

Prizes will consist of:

– a national prize
– a Mediterranean prize

In addition, the winning videos in each country will be shared with Earth Hour international team and platform, and featured on national websites as well as WWF and SHAAMS websites.

This competition aims to encourage young people to share their commitment to a more sustainable future – the ultimate goal of WWF and Earth Hour – through the power of a short film. Good luck to all participants!
